Creating a safer community

The promotion of community safety by the prevention and reduction of crime and anti-social behaviour should be the principal aim for the Constabulary in helping to create a safer Suffolk. This should underpin policing activity and initiatives within the county but we recognise that many of the problems encountered by the police cannot be resolved by their action alone.

The Constabulary will therefore work in partnership with other agencies and bodies to resolve local problems, wherever appropriate. Particular attention will be given to work with schools and the Local Education Authority to influence the attitudes of young people and foster the idea of good citizenship.

What will this statement mean for the public Preventing, or at least reducing, crime and anti-social behaviour will create a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone in Suffolk.

A safer Suffolk will also help the local economy by being more attractive for business through offering a high quality of life for employees and reduced loss due to crime and damage. Everyone can contribute through attendance at consultative and other meetings, joining Neighbourhood Watch and Crime Prevention Panels, and by putting forward their views about problems and priorities.

They will be able to rely upon the enthusiastic support of police staff at all levels People can also contribute individually by, for example following crime prevention advice and information; encouraging family and friends to be 'responsible citizens; becoming a Special Constable; providing the police with information about incidents and criminal behaviour.

Anyone who provides information that leads to their becoming a witness in a case, or who is a victim of crime, will be kept regularly informed on the progress of the case and receive sympathetic support if necessary.

Young people will receive the benefit of personal safety, crime prevention and citizenship advice provided through the Police Education Partnership.
