NW involves:

NW schemes are community initiatives which are supported by the Police, not run by them.

The effectiveness of a scheme reflects directly the efforts and enthusiasm of its members.

The amount and type of activities run by schemes are decided by members. At a basic level, membership involves being aware of what is happening in the neighbourhood, taking simple precautions to prevent and reduce the risk of crime and being alert to anything that is suspicious.

More active schemes may organise events to raise the awareness of members on subjects such as security for the home and car and property marking.

Street signs are displayed in a NW area, serving as a warning to potential criminals that a scheme is in operation.

Most schemes have regular meetings and it is recommended that a newsletter is produced on a regular basis to keep members informed and involved.

What makes a successful scheme

Success depends on a number of factors – but the most important is commitment.

For a scheme to flourish, members must be prepared to take an active role in their scheme and have a real desire to improve the safety of their local community.

All members should be fully aware of the aims and objectives of NW and the part that they can play.

Communication is important too – and members should be aware not only of local problems – but the initiatives and action required to solve them.

NW provides the opportunity to foster community spirit.
