Contacting Suffolk Police
Emergencies
You should dial ‘999’ if you believe there is a need for a Police Officer to attend immediately.
In an emergency dial 999. You should dial 999 when life is threatened or people are injured, or of there is a crime in progress or an immediate police response is necessary.
The message from the Police is simple: It is better to be safe than sorry.

Non-urgent calls
All non-urgent telephone calls to the police should be routed through the central switchboard number –
01473 613500
Minicom users should dial 01473 611160 (please note, this number is for those with hearing difficulties).
Non-urgent calls will include: -
- An incident requiring the attendance of a Police Officer, but is not deemed an emergency by the caller.
- Passing information that is considered of interest to the Police or in response to specific request for such information.
- Contacting the Safer Neighbourhood Team regarding a local issue, unless the officer concerned has provided a direct dial number. (If a direct dial number has been supplied, it may be easier to use this.)
All calls will be answered as quickly as possible but, at times of peak demand there may be delays.
The nature of the incident will determine the level of Police response and the timescale for the officers attendance; the informant will be advised of this by the Calltaker.
Calls may be monitored for quality control, security and training purposes.
Please note, telephone calls relating to noise or abandoned vehicles should be directed to the appropriate department of your local district or borough council.
Alternatively, you can report a noise or an abandoned vehicle problem online using the report a problem facility on the onesuffolk website. This is a partnership site involving the police, local, borough and district councils.
It enables members of the public to report a number of problems relating to:
Abandoned Cars

Reporting Suspicious Incidents
Accurate reporting with as much detail as possible can help the Police to react to your call quickly. When you speak to the Calltaker, they will require the following information: -
- What type of incident has occurred i.e. burglary, assault
- When and where did this happen.
- A description of the suspects
- If a vehicle was used, what type, colour and registration number.
- Tell them that you are a member of Neighbourhood Watch.
The information provided may save the Police considerable time and bring about the swift conclusion of the incident. In some cases the information however small may be part of a bigger picture and could be the final piece of evidence required to make an arrest.
It is essential that the person who witnesses the incident is the informant as this ensures accuracy of detail and prompt reporting to the Police. Dependent on the nature of the incident being reported the Co-ordinator is not expected to pass the information on behalf of others.
Incident reporting pads are available from your Community Watch Liaison Officers.
Always remember when reporting an incident to the Force Operations Room to inform the Calltaker that you are a member of NW. This enables the Police to evaluate the impact of NW, to publicise successes and provide feedback where appropriate and practicable.

Safer Neighbourhood Teams
Safer Neighbourhood Teams are a new approach to policing, with councils, community partners and volunteers working alongside police officers and police staff.
They will be working together to tackle your concerns around crime, anti-social behaviour and safety, to make the community a safer place to live and work in.
The key aims of Safer Neighbourhood Teams are:
- Listening to the public to identify their concerns
- Working with the public to tackle the issues that have been identified
- Keeping people informed of the progress that’s made
They will be out and about, and will listen and talk to you. They will want to know about the things that affect your quality of life – such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, noisy neighbours or crime.
To see the Safer Neighbourhood map across Suffolk Constabulary, please see our Force Map - this document opens in a new window - 125kb - (pdf).
Each Safer Neighbourhood Team has a website where you can find out more about the priorities being tackled by your team as well as being able to pass on information to the team or report problems affecting your day-to-day life.
